We pretty much all agree that it's freaking nuts. The reason English is an appropriate "lingua franca" is that it's spoken by so many millions (billions?) of people all over the world. International corporations use English. Hollywood movies and a great deal of international pop culture are in English. And we're one of the handful of languages that use the Latin alphabet, which is quite simple itself when compared to, say, Chinese or Cryllic alphabets. That's ONE aspect of English that makes it "simple," but other than that, it's really not and we don't claim that it is. No one says English is easy and simple. There is a ton of odd rules when it comes to reading English words in print. There are plenty of silent letters, like the "g" in "sign" or where "ph" has an "f" sound. It can be a bit difficult for someone who is totally unfamiliar with this alphabet. Try to be an American-born, English-speaking citizen and take up Russian. I myself am czech and i have problems with speaking. They complain because its not their language, its not natural to them. You have to think about grammar, vocabulary, idioms and dont tell me that everybody would understand street language. I dont even tho i been learning english for a long time kinda... And spanish is an easy language so why arent them americans able to speak it? I spent almost 10 years studying English. I consider myself fluent, but there are still times when I have no idea what someone just said, especially if they talk really fast.
